Challenge yourself! Every day in every way! That's what we do in the G/T Challenge Program at North Winn. Students from kindergarten through 8th grade bend and expand their thinking with games, strategies, plays, creative thinking, critical thinking, and contests!

The Great Pumpkin Decorating Contest
Calling all creative North Winneshiek students!! Start searching the pumpkin patches to find that special weird-shaped pumpkin to decorate for the annual Great Pumpkin Decorating Contest. You may paint, glitter, color, and add decorations to your pumpkin -- almost anything except carve (they get stinky!). Pumpkins will be due on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Battle of the Books
Calling all readers in grades 3-8. Once again, North Winn will go to "battle" with students at Decorah and St. Benedict School! The battle will be over, what else -- books!! Students will get in small groups, choose books to read from the official list, and blaze their way through -- planning their time carefully to have the group read all 20 books before the big battle in the spring! Keep your eyes and ears open for more information.
Old Creamery Theater Writing Contest
Once again, North Winn students in grades 1-6 will be submitting plays, stories, and poems for this state-wide contest sponsored by the Old Creamery Theater in Iowa's Amana Colonies. The theme this year is "The Right Stuff." The traveling theater company is looking for stories about characters who are faced with a tough decision and who choose to do the right thing, even if it's not the easiest choice to make.
In the past, North Winn students have won cash prizes and honorable mentions in this contest -- and even better have had their creative stories used in the company's traveling production.
The postmark deadline is January 22, 2010. The Old Creamery website has additional information.
Invent Iowa
Fourth and fifth graders spend November and December studying the history of inventions and famous inventors before embarking on the problem solving process and creating their own original inventions. North Winn is proud to have sent 3 students to the state Invent Iowa at the University of Iowa or Iowa State University in the past few years!

National Geographic Geography Bee
Calling all geography buffs! Travel the world -- virtually if you must -- to hone your geography skills for this competition to be held in early January at North Winn.
Go to the National Geographic website and check out the "Study Corner" for sample questions.
Letters About Literature
Students in grades 4-6 will once again compete in the Letters About Literature national competition sponsored by the Library of Congress Center for the Book. In October, students choose a book to read or re-read that will inspire them to write a mock letter to the author explaining how the book has affected their perspective.

Future Problem Solvers
Teams of middle schoolers work together to use their creative problem solving skills to tackle challenging futuristic problems in a state-wide competition. We are now working on our first topic -- Invasive Species.
